HYBRIT’s hydrogen storage has now been tested commercially on the electricity market. Its excellent results are important for the industry’s transition.The hydrogen storage was first put into operation during the summer of 2022, with tests continuing until 2024.

SSAB is aiming to launch the world’s first fossil-free steel at a commercial scale by around 2026. While the greener variant of the metal is the hottest topic on the steel market right now, there is still a lot of obscurity around it. To answer some of the key questions, the Swedish company recently hosted a factpacked webinar called, “What is fossil-free steel and when will production start?”.
The HYBRIT initiative was started by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall to develop a new technology for hydrogen-based iron and steelmaking.
HYBRIT has taken another important step in developing the overall value chain for fossil-free iron and steel production.
SSAB works with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall in Sweden as part of the HYBRIT initiative.
With the technological shift in steel manufacturing being the need of the hour, in 2016, Swedish manufacturer SSAB joined forces with mining company LKAB and energy provider Vattenfall, thus HYBRIT was born.
