ArcelorMittal commissions a first for the European steel industry to convert waste wood into bio-coal in order to reduce fossil coal consumption at its steel plant in Ghent, Belgium.
Even though there have been several technological advancements, most of the world´s steel is still produced in blast furnaces (BFs) resulting in over eight percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Finnish Outokumpu, the global leader in sustainable stainless-steel, invests 9,9 MEUR in Swedish Envigas and becomes one of the company’s major shareholders with a 20% ownership.
It is common knowledge that producing steel is highly carbon intensive. According to the most recent International Energy Agency reports, global steel production continues to be dominated by conventional process routes. Significant changes in steel production pathways are needed to stay true to the net zero goals. While many stakeholders may have turned their attention to the implementation of (green) hydrogen, CCU, and CCS, another viable solution might be waiting just around the corner: biocoke.
