Under the name Digital Twins for Green Steel (DiGreeS), Tata Steel Nederland, Saarstahl, and voestalpine Group are investigating possibilities for introducing new steel production routes and reducing the ecological footprint.
A research project to establish decarbonization technologies for the steelmaking industry has been awarded a €1.8 million research grant from the European Union (EU) via the Research Fund for Coal and Steel.
The international steel and technology group has successfully issued its first green corporate bond, for EUR 500 million. The bond has a term of five years and a coupon of 3.75%, and met with high investor demand.
With greentec steel, voestalpine developed a clear plan to transform its steel production. With the launch of the Green Financing Framework, the Group laid the foundation for the issuance of green bonds and other financing instruments.
With a unique flagship project, voestalpine, together with Mercedes-Benz and TSR Recycling, aims to demonstrate the technical feasibility of circular economy projects.
voestalpine has produced the world’s first high-quality “green” wire rod from hydrogen-reduced pure iron and scrap at its site in Donawitz. The hydrogen-reduced pure iron was produced in the Hyfor pilot plant.
By commissioning Primetals Technologies Austria GmbH to supply the EAF—the technological heart of the transformation to steel production powered by green electricity—voestalpine has taken an important next step in realizing this major project.
Once fully operational, the new plant has the capacity to annually produce 205,000 tons of special steels for highly sophisticated customer segments. The region is reaping significant economic benefits from investment in this major project.
Only a few weeks after the official start of construction at the voestalpine site in Donawitz, the traditional groundbreaking ceremony for greentec steel took place at the Group’s headquarters in Linz.
Compact Membrane Systems, Inc. announced the launch of a new carbon capture pilot in collaboration with voestalpine. Optiperm™ carbon is a breakthrough carbon capture technology that unlocks low cost, low energy, fully electrified, poison-resistant and chemicals-free point source carbon capture.
