Hitachi Energy has delivered a modular eHouse solution to Ovako, the leading European manufacturer of steel and one of the largest steel recyclers in the Nordic countries, to electrify the 20 megawatts (MW) electrolyzer in Hofors, Sweden.

Ovako, the leading European manufacturer of steel and one of the largest steel recyclers in the Nordic countries, is inaugurating the hydrogen plant at its Hofors mill which marks a significant milestone in the effort towards a more sustainable steel industry, with the potential for substantial reductions in global emissions.

FerroSilva has a letter of intent in place with Ovako for land use, as well as an offtake agreement for parts of its future production of fossil-free sponge iron.

The new hydrogen plant in Hofors will make Ovako the first in the world to heat steel with fossil-free hydrogen prior to rolling.

During a conversation with the Green Steel World, Ms. Katarina Kangert, Head of Sustainability and Safety at Ovako Group, highlighted some key elements that set the company with 500 years of steelmaking legacy apart and what makes it passionate about offering specialty steels that bring huge benefits to customers and society.

Four new state-of-the-art rolling stands will be installed in the rolling mill in Hällefors.
