JFE BS Corp. selects Danieli Digimelter for Mizushima Works

JFE Bars & Shapes Corporation (JFE BS), part of the JFE Group, has selected Danieli as its technological partner for the replacement of an existing DC electric arc furnace with a new 120-ton Danieli Digimelter with Q-One system at Mizushima Works in the JFE Kurashiki facility of West Japan Works.

The investment reflects JFE Bars & Shapes’ commitment to operational efficiency and sustainability. Beyond improving the current furnace’s performance, the upgrade supports the JFE Group’s broader decarbonization strategy by reducing emissions and optimizing resource utilization. The new EAF is scheduled to start operations in early 2028 and will produce high-quality billets from recycled steel scrap, which are rolled into reinforcing bars and structural shapes for construction and infrastructure projects.

Designed as a brownfield project, it will leverage existing infrastructure such as the electrical cabin and most of the working platform, minimizing the environmental footprint and accelerating the project timeline. Smart, tailor-made solutions — including Q-One® modular equipment, containerized hydraulic units, and a customized FTP primary line— make this modernization feasible while reducing overall CapEx.

The groundbreaking Q-One® power feeding system will deliver precise control over current, voltage, and frequency, enhancing process efficiency, lowering energy and electrode consumption, and minimizing grid disturbances. Its redundant architecture ensures operational flexibility and a competitive edge in performance, sustainability, and production costs. Additionally, advanced automation will enable real-time monitoring of liquid steel levels, optimizing the melting process for greater efficiency. Safety remains a top priority, supported by solutions that reduce the need for human intervention in hazardous areas.
