Hydnum Steel to promote green steel distribution with Knauf Interfer

Both companies will collaborate closely to advance towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly value chain, reaffirming commitment to sustainability in the steel industry.

In response to the growing demand for sustainable and low-environmental-impact industrial solutions, Hydnum Steel, the first green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Knauf Interfer, one of the leading European steel processing and distribution companies. The partnership aims to boost the supply of emission-free green steel in Europe. Both companies will collaborate closely to advance towards a more efficient and environmentally friendly value chain, reaffirming commitment to sustainability in the steel industry.

Under this agreement, Knauf Interfer will purchase green steel from Hydnum for an approximate value of 80 million euros per year. Additionally, they will create a green steel supply network, utilizing Knauf Interfer’s production and supply chain management platform centered around a trimodal hub in Duisburg, Germany. This excellent inner port location will serve as a key hub to serve customers in Central European markets, optimizing logistics and ensuring efficient, resilient and sustainable deliveries.

Future collaboration is also contemplated in steel product processing, with Knauf Interfer offering cutting, segmentation, and re-coiling services tailored for Hydnum Steel’s customers. Transparency regarding their steel CO2 footprint will be provided to them through Knauf Interfer´s straight forward EPD based approach.

As part of their commitment to sustainability, the two companies plan to establish a circular economy system to recycle ferrous scrap together. This innovative concept will allow scrap generated by Knauf Interfer’s network to be recycled at Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant, closing the production loop and ensuring a complete circular economy.
