Adient is a global maker of seating systems for the automotive industry. The company makes about 20 million seat every year and works with all major automakers and vehicle classes. Adient is working with H2 Green Steel for the supply of green steel, to address emissions generated in the manufacturing of automotive seating systems.
“As a company, we are committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative, a collaboration between leading global institutions to set a science-based climate target. It is our goal to reduce emissions at our production sites that are caused directly by our own sources or indirectly by our energy suppliers by 75% by 2030. In parallel, we aim to reduce emissions along our supply chains by 35% over the same period. In doing so, Adient actively fosters the industry’s transformation towards a more responsible use of natural resources,” says Michel Berthelin, Executive Vice President Adient EMEA.
The two companies have agreed that H2 Green Steel will supply steel with low carbon footprint from 2026 onwards to be used it in Adient’s metal products. The final agreement was further formalized September 1, at Adient’s offices in Burscheid in Germany. H2 Green Steel’s production process ensures a reduced environmental impact of the raw materials processed by replacing coal with green hydrogen in its production and by the use of electricity from renewable energy sources.
In this way, mainly water and heat are produced as waste products. This is considered a major step in reducing indirect emissions in Adient’s supply chain.
“Adient is showing industry leadership and is acting on the demand for more sustainable solutions from the automotive industry. Frontrunners like Adient are future-proofing their business and securing a competitive advantage through green steel, in addition to making sure they can deliver on their Science Based Targets”, says Mark Bula, Chief Commercial Officer, H2 Green Steel.
